The power of an ERP solution is highly dependent on the knowledge of the company using it. One company can use the software really well, while another company, well, not so much. We often use the analogy of an airplane; the airplane is built to fly, but it only works if there is a pilot sitting in it that knows what he is doing. Is your company flying the plane, or figuring out how to open the cockpit door?
All of our customers are on different journeys with their ERP solution, and those situations are constantly changing. Our customers experience turnover, and turnover causes an erosion of knowledge as it relates to their ERP. Someone leaves, and their knowledge of the ERP and processes it supports walks out with them. Someone new is hired, and typically they are “trained” by someone who may have some idea about how the software works, or they may be told what buttons to click in order to accomplish a task. Then, the new person is left to figure it out from there.
If this cycle happens multiple times, in multiple departments, it can have a real negative affect on a company and its operating efficiency. Typically, people default to using tools they understand (like Excel, Access, paper, etc.) to solve a problem, rather than fully exploring or understanding their ERP’s capabilities. The company then can devolve in to a situation where they are barely using the ERP at all, much less for its original purpose.
So, how is this cycle broken? Usually, someone at the company takes a look around, and cannot believe what has happened, and starts to push back on all of the spot solutions. They intuitively know that the ERP is not being used to its fullest, but they don’t know what to do, and they raise their hand and ask for help. This is where a Visual South Account Review can be extremely helpful.
